Quilting with Passion and Purposes

YOUR JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY AWAITS

About Me

I have a lot of patience. Anyone new to our circle would always sit with me.I’d show them how to put things together. When high school students came, I would be the one to teach them how to sew. I never thought about it. It’s one of those things that I just do. And I know I do it well, the quilting especially. The idea of teaching felt out of my comfort zone…. but I was drawn to it.

I made a quilt for my first grandchild Claire, named after my father-in-law, who I had taken care of. He was an artist, working with paints. Every day I would give him his meals and we talked about art, and color. My friend and I started sewing the pieces together and then opening them up and revealing the pattern that came out – each a difference kaleidoscope type of effect. It was a new way of taking the fabric and turning into something unique. Clair, senior, would love this – subconsciously bringing his creativity, his love of color into the creation of this piece, for his namesake granddaughter. A spiritual connection, a connection of deep care and love.

The Quilters’ Journey

About Quilting

You learn a lot from putting two pieces of material together. Everyone’s creativity is different. When you work from your instinct, what comes out is always surprising, usually beautiful. And it’s also a true expression of the person who made it. You put a lot of love and passion into a quilt.

Sewing is my meditation time… very freeing, just put the pieces together. It’s a calming, pleasing time for me, alone with myself. The finishing is gratifying, satisfying… wow, you made that! Very therapeutic for me.

Write it. Shoot it. Publish it. Crochet it, sauté it, whatever. MAKE.”  —  Joss Whedon

The Quilters’ Journey

My path through the world of sewing, quilting, and textiles has been wonderful. I have experienced awakenings, frustrations, fulfillment, discovery, and growth. Many of the thoughts I have had on my journey I have heard echoed by my fellow quilters.

DO ANY OF THESE SOUND FAMILIAR?

♦ With all the ideas I have, how do I choose the right one?

♦ I am bored with doing the same thing over and over, but don’t feel like I know enough to do anything else.

♦ I am too old to try something new.

♦ Now that I have some time for myself, I want to create something special.

♦ I have design ideas I have always wanted to try, but they’re stuck in my head.

♦ The feeling of not having enough time, seems like a bad habit.

♦ I’m afraid I’ll feel like a fraud. I’m just not creative.

♦ I am frustrated that I do not take time to try new things.

If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.”

Nora Roberts

What Can You Do?

Watch endless how-to Videos on YouTube. Learn how to do this. Learn how to do that. But then never do them.

Take more classes. There’s a lot of good ones. And then end up with more UFO’s

Continue to think about the great ideas you have. And then be frustrated because you cannot not figure out how to do them.

Download more patterns. How many do you need?

Buy more fabric because you love it. And then not be able to figure out how to use it.

Buy someone else’s next great idea. Only to think you could have done it better. “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Stop doing what everyone says you “should” do. Do something YOU actually care and dream about.

FAQ’s

Why should I join stitch?

Stitch is for folks looking to try new things working with fabric. Who are thinking outside the box. (No box required.) Who bring a fresh perspective. In a safe space. With support.

Consider a quilt. The quilt top is a piece of textile art. The batting makes the filler layer. The backing finishes the sandwich. The stitching can be hand-tyed, machine done, or hand-stitched. And then the whole thing is bound. All of these elements are open to innovation and creativity. Stitch is a place to ask what about this? Could I try that? How do I do that? Or How would that look?

So all you need is curiosity.

What will I learn in Stitch?

You will learn about new ideas and techniques in quilting. You will meet people who love being creative. You will encounter new ideas about crafting with textiles. But most importantly you will learn about yourself.

What if I can’t join the lessons live?

Everything will be recorded and will be available for you to watch as many times as you want. And I and anyone who is online will always be available to answer questions.

Why is Charter Membership for a whole year?

The Charter Membership is actually a Lifetime Membership. We are charging less than $25 per month when you look at it over a year. We want the commitment from our Charter Members to participate and contribute over the first 12 months.

Why is the community not on Facebook?

We have several reasons for this. Most importantly, we want to avoid the distractions that are always present there. Stitch is about creativity and new things. I have found that distractions are lethal to that process. Also the openness for chatting and messaging within Stitch makes for much better collaboration.

What if I need to learn a basic skill?

There are many resources available to you. First and foremost are the members of Stitch. The collective experience is extensive. In addition, the existing video archives cover many topics from beginner to advanced.

I am not an advanced quilter, can I still benefit from STITCH?

Of course! Stitch is a safe place to learn, practice, and hone quilting skills. But Stitch is really about a lot more than quilting. It is about creativity and thinking outside the box. So, in some cases your lack of experience may be useful. You might ask questions others miss. You might have ideas that others dismiss. A fresh perspective is always valuable. That is one of the core values of Stitch. If you love working with textiles, you definitely should consider Stitch. Even as a Charter Member.
